Four all-time classics: great books to learn English

PBS

Four all-time classics: great books to learn English. The following books are in my opinion the very best to learn English.

I start with a book written by John Steinbeck called OF MICE AND MEN.

This book is top of my list because it is a great read.  It’s short and is a period drama based on migrant farm workers.   The two main characters are George and Lennie.  This book was published in 1937. It tells the story of George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced migrant ranch workers, who move around California looking for new job opportunities during the Great Depression in the United States.
it is a great read and recommended to levels of intermediate to advance.

Book number two is ANIMAL FARM written by George Orwell.

another short novel which tells the story of animals rebelling against human masters. This satire is a wonderful read and should be read by everyone.  This book appeals to all reading levels. Due to George Orwell’s simple use of the English language.  Also, the animals make it easy to understand as they speak in short clear sentences.

recommended from lower intermediate to advance.

My third recommendation is an old time favourite called THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA written by the great Ernest Hemingway.

Ernest Hemingway is well-known for his clear concise writing style which is great for English language learners. A book which has been read in many schools around the world.  It’s the tale of a fisherman and his battle to catch a giant marlin. The fisherman befriends a young boy who forges a close friendship during his exploits.

recommended to all levels from intermediate to advance.

My last recommendation has to be  LORD OF THE FLIES  written by William Golding.

This book is a modern classic and is regarded as one of the most popular books for studying English text.  It is about a group of boys who are isolated on a desert island.  The society they create descends into ruthless behaviour. Golding uses dramatic and descriptive language, almost like poetry, that makes you feel as you are taking part in the story.

recommended to all levels from intermediate to advance.

there are other books I would recommend for English learners, but these above are my favourite and are all great enjoyable reads.

all ESO teachers are qualified and English native speaking who knows these books inside out, if you need to prepare for an English literature exam or just want to improve your writing reading and vocabulary, try one of our courses or just try a lesson with ESO.
