Native and non native teachers

Teachers from all over the world

There millions of English teachers all over the world, some qualified others not.  So how do you evaluate a teachers ability to teach English well.  Well for starters it’s important that the teacher you are looking for has the right credentials.  Let’s look at these to start off with.

TEFL, CELTA, TESOL, DELTA… all of these acronyms relate to one thing: teaching English as a foreign language. The range of courses on offer can be confusing. Whether you are new to teaching or you have been in the teaching profession for decades, the following insights will help you to make an informed course choice.  Students be aware, if your teacher does not have one or more of these certificates, then the chances tha your teacher is not right for you is mighty high.

student need to make sure in my opinion that the teacher is qualified and is a native English speaking teacher.  This does not mean you must at all costs go with a native speaker, but it makes sense to go with one if you are not only looking to improve your grammar, but also your pronunciation, idioms, expressions and so on.

NATIVE versus NON NATIVE that is the question.
It is an argument that has raged across social media groups of languages teachers and teachers for decades.

Who makes a better teacher of a language: a person who learnt it naturally and speaks it perfectly with the “correct” accent, or someone who has gone through the same process as the student?

although my choice would be a native teacher, it doesn’t mean a non native cannot teach.

with over 1.5 billion learners, it’s close to impossible to only have native teachers.

Non nave teachers have been frustrated for years, knowing that most of the time a native teacher will move to the top of the pecking list due to the mother tongue.  But, non natives should not despair, if you come from the  same country as the student, the advantage more times then not a weighted on your side.

so if you had a choice what would you choose?

a native or a non native.

Well at ESO English study online we only have British and American native teachers and the reason for that is that as an online school the the request is overwhelmingly for native teachers.  www.english-study-online.com
