American TV shows and movies are all-pervasive so I am pretty certain we have all heard an American expression. Now that social media has taken over these American expressions have become even more part of our lives. Whether we are using these correctly, or even understanding them correctly is a whole different matter. Let’s walk through the 5 most commonly used American expressions and phrases.

1. Under the weather
Saying that you feel under the weather means that you’re feeling il – slightly unwell.
Typically, a mild cold, cough or flu-like symptoms means one is “under the weather”

Example: “I’m sorry I missed your party but I was feeling under the weather”.

2. Think Outside the Box
“Think outside the box” is a very popular American expression. This American phrase is used in schools, in business, and in conversations. The “box” represents what’s already been done – something everyone else is doing. “Outside the box” urges the person to think more creatively and differently in a way that has not been done before. This American expression is simply asking one to try a new approach to problem-solving.

Example: “As you approach this assignment, I ask you to think outside the box”

3. Playing Hardball
This American expression has its origin in the very American sport of baseball. The game of baseball is played with a rock-hard ball. Playing hardball means that the person is not looking for an easy way, they are ready to use all they have to win.

Example: “They want to win this business and they are not afraid to play hardball.”

4. Piece of Cake
“Piece of cake” is an American expression that means something is very easy. Just another way of saying, “Too easy”.

Example: Question: “Can you get this assignment done by Monday?”
Response: “Absolutely, it’s a piece of cake.”

5. Costs an Arm and a Leg
This very popular American expression means something is very expensive. It’s a way of implying something is close to unaffordable.

Example:
“The flight to Australia costs an arm and a leg.”
